Just as Son Goku is the Dragon Ball version of Sun Wukong, Krillin’s power-up is the Dragon Ball version of the Buddhist teaching anattā. Inspiration is taken but there are slight differences. Some teachings from both factor in when it comes to Krillin’s power-up, but I will primarily be focusing on the Buddhist teachings more than the Hindu teachings (although both have had some influence on the other). To preface, the usage of Buddhism & Hinduism in relation to Dragon Ball is not perfectly aligned. Mūga no Ryōiki / Non-Self State : The unique power-up that Krillin attained & that is inspired of Buddhist teachings. I’ve also discovered that “State of Equanimity” was a more accurate term than “No Ego Zone” too.) So, a more accurate way of saying “ Mūga no Ryōiki” would be “ NON-SELF STATE.” (Personally, I had been referring to Krillin’s power-up as “ State of Equanimity” until recent. “ Ryōiki” meaning area, domain, field, realm, state. Also meaning anattā or anātman (non-self). “ Mūga” meaning selflessness, self-effacement, & self-renunciation.

Now, let’s break down what Mūga no Ryōiki means. This sentence is where the name for Krillin’s power-up originated. Roshi says “ Mūga no Ryōiki” when explaining that Krillin is rising above himself or stepping into the realm of selflessness.

I became tired of waiting on someone else to explain the meaning behind Krillin’s power-up in DBS EP 76, so I decided to do my own research! Through said research, I’ve discovered that there is much deeper meaning & plenty of symbolism behind the power-up. It is commonly reffered to as “ No Ego Zone” but this translation is an oversimplification of the true meaning. “ Mūga no Ryōiki” is the power-up Krillin gets in Dragon Ball Super episode 76. This is why the Immortal Phoenix was able to gather the Paradise Herb to make the Immortality Elixer that Master Roshi drank. In Buddhism, t he phoenix is a symbol of enlightenment.

The Paradise Herb only appears for enlightenment beings. Immortality was something gifted to Roshi by the Immortal Phoenix, then gifted to him again by Krillin, who had achieved enlightenment. Roshi knew of the blessed herb that was able to extend the lifespan, but he did not earn it through enlightenment as Krillin did. The Immortality Elixer? was likely made from the Paradise Herb? brought to Roshi by the Immortal Phoenix. In the “EXTRA THOUGHTS” section at the bottom of my post explaining Krillin’s power, I explain how the Immortal Phoenix granted Roshi immortality. This power-up has a connection to the Immortal Phoenix that granted Roshi immortality. So… I wasn’t even trying to do anymore research, I just happened to discover more info about Krillin’s Non-Self State lol ?. Combined DB manga panels & an image of the phoenix from the manga “Phoenix” by Osamu Tezuka.) THE IMMORTAL PHOENIX & IT’S CONNECTION TO THE PARADISE HERB ?
